I received an unusual assignment last week. I’m normally shooting in corporate office buildings or industrial settings. The setting for last weeks shoot was miles off well traveled roads near Maysville,Ky. I was assigned by American Archaeology Magazine to document uncovering artifacts from a Native American settlement dating to 1200 AD.
Dr.David Pollack and his wife Gwynn Henderson of the Kentucky Archaeological Survey are heading up this project. Artifacts include clay pots, arrowheads, pipes, and decorative items such as bear teeth carved with human figures. These early people lived off the land growing maize and beans.They also hunted bear, white tail deer, elk, and wild turkeys.
I understand that this site was first discovered in the early 1800’s and back then the land owner would charge people to dig for artifacts and if a person found nothing of note the land owner would sometimes sell them “artifacts” he himself had created ! I guess scams are nothing new .
